Barbarian
The Barbarian is a relatively weak hero early on,
but quite quickly gains a rather high attack speed and high damage.

Skills:
Innate: Kuniyo's Spirit
Lowers the armour of all creeps in a medium area around the Barbarian. A decent starting ability that helps the Barbarian but is more useful when there are other units killing with their normal attack around because of its short duration.
Level 1: Combat Mastery (Passive)
A passive ability that grants a chance to do double damage and a chance to evade normal attacks, the percentages when maxed out are 90% chance of a 2x critical hit and a 45% chance to evade. Not that great of an ability to have early on because of the low damage of the hero and the creeps. However it is essential to eventually max this out for later rounds.
Level 1: Trothfang's Butchery
The Barbarian's last resort move which stuns all creeps around him, with the duration increasing as the ability progresses. The damage it deals is minimal but it doesn't matter because the stun range is large enough. If you want to be a crazy killing Barbarian ignore this ability, but this is what you should get if you want to be defensive with him.
This skill can save you/buy your time from offensive spells
Level 6: Berserk
An ability that increases his attack speed and movement speed but also makes him take more damage. You shouldn't activate this ability on it's first few levels (though it does depend on difficulty) since while you do kill more it also makes you extremely vulnerable to offense. When maxed out Berserk gives you a large attack speed bonus and the extra damage taken is very small. However if the game has progressed to a point to where you can reach the max attack speed without Berserk you will want to use the tome of retraining to get rid of it.
Level 10: Everild's Rage
Anti-magic potion and purification can remove the effect of this skill
Increases his armour, life regeneration and attack damage for as long as the Rage is in effect. A very useful buff but it can be dispelled, fortunately it eventually has a lower cooldown then it's duration which reduces the problem of purification. So early on just activate it when you need to and when maxed out you should be able to keep up the Rage all the time.
Summary: The Barbarian is the best direct damage dealing melee hero in the game which also makes him the best hero for life steal. When using both Berserk and Everild's Rage he can deal crazy amounts of damage, unfortunately he can't do so early on. His medium armour means he takes extra damage from normal attacks and the early levels of Berserk make it even worse. So often the best strategy especially on the higher difficulties is to go Trothfang's Butchery and ignore Berserk. Then to get Berserk later on when you can almost max it out. Trothfang's Butchery is your best skill against offensive spells, if you cant counter a stun/drunk, you can use it to buy you time, just need to level it up so its stun duration is nearly as long as the stun/drunk duration.
later in the game it can also buy you time for health/vampire potion cooldown or skill cooldown.

Tips:
- Get Nimsha as soon as possible, it will increase you killing power more than any item!
- You don't need much more items than Bloodthirst & Nimsha + defensive items, as you get attackspeed from Berserk and damage+armor from your Everild's Rage.
- Use a Vampiric Potion on waves with thorns (Turtle Wave 29 and Armored Warklin Wave 38)
- If someone purifies over you, remember that your ultimate is dispellable, but not your level 6, so you might end up taking more damage if someone does that.
